How did we get here.....
Maras Melts literally came about on a whim, 2021 trying to be that "sustainable" mother who's a candle addict. I found in the pandemic, I was home a lot, burning a lot more candles for my sanity!!
Obviously being a mother of asthmatics I had time on my hands to research what went into my favourite candles, the more and more I researched, the more I became upset about what I was burning and inhaling in my home. I started making conscious decisions about what type of candles and home fragrances to purchase- I started to buy soy wax candles and found them to be much better in terms of longevity, scent throw and easier on the chests of the little people I reside with. After much more research, I learned about the farming process with Soy and demand for it which is disrupting rain forests, which upset me further so we've made some massive changes in terms of where we source our products.
I found coconut wax candles on the market but then I discovered that contain certain fragrances (parfum) are artificial and toxic to us as well as animals so that clearly defeats the purpose of them being healthier alternative- some fragrances are oily, so I decided to make my own for the home.
I posted my hard work on social media just to highlight my hobby then people kept reaching out, asking me to make them.
I gifted a lot to friends and family and they encouraged me to go further so that's how Maras Melts got here. It's an ultimate privilege to do this, especially as I didnt think I'd be able to make candles again.
We really hope we can remain to serve the wonderful people we have come across so far.
We are back after 2 years, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in August 2023 age 38 so I have such a different outlook on life now and I'm just so grateful to be well and in a position to regain my passion for candle making as well as spread some breast cancer awareness where I can.
I had been gifted so many candles during my recovery period that were beautifuly scented, expensive but- their ingredients, and the fact they didnt burn well, tunnelled or frosted... gave me that extra boost to get back out there. I'm using candles so much myself now, it's only fair to extend that love out to others. Also, we need to be using healthier waxes for our candles ❤️
We researched and discovered how strong, durable and long lasting coconut shells are and how many different uses people can use shells for.
I managed to source and now use coconut shell candle containers that are strong and stable.
They have been hand varnished with a non toxic heat resistant lacquer. The visual combination of the coconut wax in a coconut shell is just a beautiful. They also hold 180-200 grams of wax so sticking with the sustainablity concept, and moving on from Glass jars, but we still have amazing natural scents and reasonable prices so I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
